 Describe animal through traits
- Trait => any observable or measurable characteristic of an animal
- Observable trait = appearance
- Measurable trait = performance
- Trait = coat colour & weaning weight

- Genotype => genetic background for its phenotype
- Environmental effects => effects that external factors have on animal’s performance
