Chemie Synthetic Polymers Klasse 11
Synthetic Polymers
Definition:
Man-made organic macromolecules
• Organic compounds→ build by elements C, H, O, N, S, eventually halogens
• Macromolecules → big molecules
Made from repeating monomers, >1000 form a polymer
• Man-made →produced transformation of natural product or sunthesis
Properties:
• Easy to use
• Cheap to produce Very varied combinations of
• Durable properties
• Flexible
Made to fit the purpose
• Water resistance
• etc.
Classification of synthetic polymers:
1. according to morphology
• thermoplasts/thermoplastic
o no long-range order (amorphous)
o no cross links between polymer chains
o no covalent bonds
o either hard or flexible
o soften/melt when heated → keep form when cooled
• thermosets
o long range order (crystalline)
o many cross links
o many covalent bonds
o hard, cannot be moulded
o do not soften/ melt when heated → decompose at high temp.
• elastomer
o some cross links
o few covalent bonds
o weak forces of attraction
o can be deformed but return to original shape
o do not melt
2. According to production
1. condensation polymerisation
