Assignment 2: Health and Safety in the
Engineering Workplace

,Task 1

Identify a range of hazards in your two working environments. How did you identify these hazards, i.e.
what methods did you use? It is expected that you identify at least four hazards relevant to each chosen
workplace (i.e. 8 in total). Select different hazards for each workplace, as this will cover a wider range.

Hazards Method used to identify the problem
Chemical (absorbers made from chemicals) Some of the equipment we use, they’ve been
made by extreme chemicals that when they
become solid can be dangerous. We shouldn’t
touch the equipment with our bare hands
because we will absorb those chemicals. They
leave a black and blue stain on our hands which
can cause itching.
Sustained awkward posture The repetition of the same movement can cause
long term back pains and muscle spasms. This
happens because we try to carry on weight and
the wrong posture can lead to injury, no matter
the weight of the product

Manual handling Lifting an item, multiple times a day can lead to
injury. Also, lifting a very heavy piece of
equipment can also lead to a serious injury and
there is a change of equipment to slip from your
hands and land on your feet
Physical hazard caused by Faulty equipment such In order to identify the hazard, I used a
as a DC power supply Multimeter to check if the value of voltage we
put is 5, then we should get 5 as well in the
Multimeter. This is used to reduce the hazard of
powering up equipment and damaging it by
placing higher voltage.
Radiation We use RF signals all the time to do testing on
different appliances and sometimes we need to
enter the chamber to keep notes. Entering the
chamber strong RF signals can make you feel
dizzy and cause you a headache. The constant
exposure to RF signals can lead to further
damages in your body
Ergonomic Every job includes paperwork that needs to be
complete in a specific time period. Sometimes it
can take 3-4 hours a day or even more. The poor
workstation setup in an office can cause your
health problems by the way sit down and
because your body doesn’t move for ours and
your blood circulation it’s not good.
Biological hazards Bacteria can spread in a very fast pace from the
hand of a person to a tool with a simple touch.

, Due to the recent pandemic in our world we
need to take measures of killing these bacteria
from our hands.
Noise caused by equipment A constant loud noise can cause headache to
people who are working in the building.

This may also lead to migraines and make people
feel sick and stay home. There are machines that
produce a lot of noise in order to operate.

Task 2

To prevent the hazards from causing harm, what control measures could you put into place. These
measures would normally reduce the probability (likelihood) or impact of the hazard from causing harm.
Justify your choices. Start this work by assessing which of the hazards you have identified pose non-
trivial risks. Try to relate control measures to the relevant regulatory requirements.

Personal protective equipment includes gloves, glasses and safety footwear which are designed to
reduce exposer to the hazard. PPE is usually seen as the last line of defence and is usually used in
conjunction with one or more control measures.

For example, as I mentioned above, we are required to lift heavy equipment that can cause harm to us
physically. Currently, one way to reduce the risk of manual handling is to wear appropriate PPE such as
steel toe boots and gloves which allow you to have a better grip.

 Another way to control the risk is to ask help of other colleagues when lifting a heavy equipment
or use trolleys to transfer the equipment from one room to the other.
 Create a poster or evaluate which equipment you’ll be able to lift it by yourself and not with the
help of trolley or an employee. For example, if we need to lift an oscilloscope that weights 3
kilos, there is not need of health compared to a surge generator that weights 42 kilos. Place a
blue sticker (mandatory instruction) that show two people lifting an objective

As for the RF signals, currently we stop the test and then enter the chamber. For newcomers, sometimes
they may not understand the instruction and enter the chamber while the test is running. One way to
reduce this hazard is:

 Put signs outside the chamber like shown below
