2020.10.02 - Life and Environment Seminar
30 years of primate research in Kibae: What does the future
bring? Colin Chapman
Borneo - lost a lot of forests - 15 million primates lost
Logging doesn’t include forest deforestation but is degradation. 6m tropical forest logged
each year. Doesn’t include bushmeat hunting
Kibale - snare trapping - for small ungulates - catches other animals like chimpanzee which
loses its fingers - very shocking images
4m primates consumed each year in amazon
Population decline doesn’t include diseases like ebola - caused chimps to decrease by 89%
and gorillas 56%. Doesn’t include losses from climate change - areas where there will be
most increase in temperature because of climate change correlates where there are more
concentrated populations of primates - also areas in brazil and madagascar are where the
endangered species are most populated.
Monkeys themselves causing changes - markhamia lutea - like eating flowers- ones they like
they could eat the whole flower preventing pollination etc
Elephant abundance going up - also affecting deforestation - eat bark killing trees.
Kibale climate - more rain, less drought but higher temperature, earlier rainy season → these
affect plant composition by decreasing proteins, increasing tannins which also decreases
proteins by binding to them. Increased fiber - not good?
By river - lots of food available for leaf eaters but little populating near the river because its
poor quality with lower protein to fiber ratio
Wet conditions also allow parasite eggs to persist longer = increased infection risk.
More contact with people = increase in transmission - ebola, covid, e.coli
