Lecture 1 What are international organisations?
Definition of an International Organization (IO):

Strict/traditional definition:
"A formal (foundational treaty), continuous structure established by agreement between members
[…] from at least 2 sovereign states with the aim of pursuing the common interest of the
membership" (Archer, 2001) (joined voluntarily) (still applied today, but only for one kind of
organisation)

Updated Definition
Traditional definition no longer accurate because more actors are involved besides sovereign states

 Loose/updated definition:

International Organisations are formal international social institutions characterized by behavioural
patterns based on international norms and rules, which prescribe and proscribe behaviour in
recurrent situations and lead to the convergence of expectations on the international stage.

Institutions are rules that tell actors in an international system what they can do and cannot do.

Rules that proscribe and prescribe behaviour

Set of rules meant to govern international behaviour.

Four important actors in international relations: IGO’s INGO’s, state and multinational cooperation’s

Types of International Organizations
 Intergovernmental organizations – IGOs.
 Non-governmental organizations – NGOs and international NGOs – INGOs
 Multinational/transnational corporations – MNCs/TNCs
