Body care
Body analysis
➢ Foundation of the plan
➢ Determine treatment objective and approach
➢ Recognition of faults outside the scope of practice
➢ Accumulate information, providing guidance for the treatment plan

Why is body analysis important?
Provides up to date consultation cards, records periodic weight and measurement checks, tracks figure improvement, changes in treatment
applications and machine settings as well as tracking the clients progress

Somatotypes are based on:
▫ Body framework
▫ Muscle mass
▫ Fat distribution
▫ Relative proportions of bone length vs bone girth

Somatotypes:
• Ectomorph: long, slender neck. Narrow shoulders. Long slim limbs.
• Endomorph: round body, easy weight gain. poor muscle definition.
• Mesomorph: muscular, lean, broad shoulders. Evenly distributed body fat

Plumbline
Adiposity, striae (hormonal or mechanical causes), varicose veins, skin texture, superfluous hair
Lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis, flat back, flabby buttocks, winged scapula, pes planus, hyperextended knees, knock knees and bowed legged.
Keratosis Pilaris (hair follicle blocked with keratin). Gene Varum or gene valgum.

MyPlate ratios

Protein 2-3 portions Repairs body tissue
Fats and oil 1-2 portions Essential fatty acids
Dairy 2 portions Calcium and bone health
Fruit 3-4 portions Vitamins and minerals
Vegetables 3-4 portions Fibre
Carbohydrates 4-7 portions Energy
Water 2 litre Waste removal

Why is good posture important Increased adiposity can lead to:
➢ maintain muscle balance • Cardio-vascular disease and strokes
➢ improve body shape and appearance • Hypertension
➢ prevents muscle tension, spasm and pain • Back and joint problems
➢ prevents stress on ligaments, tendons and joints • High cholesterol levels
➢ prevents skeletal deformities ◦ increases thorax movement • Varicose veins
➢ improved efficiency of oxygen • Kidney disease
➢ reduced risk of musculo-skeletal injuries.

Cellulite: connective tissue disorder due to trapped inflamed adipose tissue. Poor lymphatic circulation. Adipose deposit due to hormones,
water retention, nicotine, caffeine and alcohol. Aescine and Algae help to improve circulation, thus used in cellulite cream.

Weight (kg)
= BMI kg/m

Subcutaneous fat: main source of stored energy. Stored below the dermis of the skin. Protects muscles and bones from external impact
sources and insulates the body. Lead to high-risk health problems like high blood pressure, heart diseases and sleep apnoea. Visceral fat:
fatty tissue stored in the abdominal cavity and protects vital organs. Can build up in arteries and lead to health problems

Lifestyle advice:
Cut down coffee
2 litre of water per day
Multivitamin supplements

Body analysis presentation
1. Introduction
2. Medical history: my client has no medical history or medication in use that will affect the treatment
3. Somatotype and 3 reasons
4. Identify conditions: plumbline, BMI and frame size
5. Main concern
6. Treatment plan: reduce cellulite, increase circulation, improve skin tone or texture, improve muscle tone, general maintenance
7. Explain treatment plan: How will you achieve your results?
8. Home care: dry body brush for micro-circulation, 3x per week, work up to daily.

Body massage
Manipulation of soft tissue to decrease muscle tension, enhance wellbeing and promote relaxation

• Effleurage: soothing and relaxing
• Petrissage: improves circulation and sedative effect
• Tapotement: stimulates the circulatory system
• Friction: improves circulation and causes hyperaemia
• Vibrations: effects nerves and has a sedative effect

Pre-treatment and heat therapy
Reasons for pre-treatments: ▪ Size of area treated
▫ Prior to application of electrical therapy
▫ Creates heat and removes surface barriers Various forms of heat therapy:
▫ Induces muscle relaxation and softens tissue o Sauna and foam baths
▫ Relaxes tense muscle fibres and relieves muscle pain o Steam baths, cabinets and rooms
▫ Body accepts electrotherapy and tissue response is o Infra-red lamps
increased o Ultra-violet lamps
▫ Increased conductivity due to increased circulation o Whirlpool baths
o Sunbed, sunlamp and solarium
Effects of pre-heating treatments:
▫ Thermal effect on the body Effects of heat on the body:
▫ Relaxing effect on the muscles ▪ Body temperature slowly rises
▫ General relaxation ▪ Heart rate increases
▫ Surface tissue is moist and prepared for muscle contraction ▪ Surface capillaries dilate
▫ Tight, contracted muscles are relaxed ▪ Sweat glands produce more perspiration
▫ Warm showers relax and prepare the body ▪ Skin reddens and heat increases
▪ Internal blood pressure lowers
Effects of heat depends on: ▪ Waste products removed from skin surface
▪ Duration of application ▪ Lactic acids disperses through vascular circulation
▪ Intensity of heat ▪ Increased pulse rate and vascular exchange
▪ Depth of absorption ▪ Return to normal temp results in relaxation

➢ Wet pre-treatment: Steam baths, exfoliation and showers are good preparation for EMS, Interferential and Galvanism. Moisture levels
increase which enhances conductivity.
➢ Dry pre-treatment: Saunas and lamps are good preparation for G5 and vacuum suction, which can also be used as pre-treatments
