Evaluate Methods of Collecting Crime Statistics
Crime statistics are collected to identify patterns and trends in crime, including the types of
offences committed, who commits them, who is affected, and where crimes take place. These
statistics are crucial for informing crime reduction strategies, policing priorities, and
government policy, with the ultimate aim of preventing crime and protecting the public. In
England and Wales, there are two main methods used to collect crime statistics: Police
Recorded Crime (Home Office statistics) and the Crime Survey for England and Wales
(CSEW). Each method has strengths and limitations in terms of reliability, validity, and
usefulness.
