Abstract
Background: Different kind of exercise interventions are considered as a promising
intervention to reduce the number of falling incidents for older people in nursing homes. A lot
of research, with a lot of different exercise interventions and outcomes has already been

, introduced. There is currently not a clear summary about all the research of the effect of
exercise on falling incidents. This review will give a summary of all the evidence of the effect
of exercising on falling incidents and will answer the question: What are effective exercise
interventions for reducing the number of falling incidents for the older people in nursing
homes?
Method: Based on an online search (PubMed), five studies, which were eligible, were
included in this systematic review.
Results: Only 2 articles were found significant effective. Both 2 articles showed a reduction
in the number of falls. The other 3 articles showed no statistically significance with P-values
between 0,12 and 0,078. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Randomized Controlled
Trials was used for assessing risk of bias and to assess the quality of the included studies.
Conclusion: This review shows different results. Some articles show that exercising has a
positive influence of the incidence of falling for older people in nursing homes. These
effective exercise interventions were a general exercise assessment tool and balance and
resistance training. But, when focused on only older people in nursing homes, exercising does
not always reduce the number of falling incidents.

1.Introduction
One of the most critical health problems today is the care of the older people. The world is
experiencing an irreversible demographic shift that will impact on the structure of societies.
Over the next 50 years, the population of older people across the world (aged 60 years and
older) is expected to increase from 673 million people in 2005 to 2 billion by 2050 (Laidlaw,
2009). This means that the number of older people in nursing homes is increasing rapidly as
well (Brown, 2009). The populations are getting older in the western world and living with
