, Introduction
Leadership is a fundamental component of advanced nursing practice and is central to the
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) role. As DNP-prepared nurses, professionals are
expected to lead interdisciplinary teams, drive evidence-based initiatives, and influence
policy to improve patient and population health outcomes. Leadership styles play a
significant role in determining how nurses motivate others, manage conflict, and
implement organizational change. This paper explores my personal leadership identity
and evaluates the leadership style that best represents my approach to guiding others in
the clinical setting.
Overview of Leadership Theories in Nursing
Several leadership theories have shaped contemporary nursing practice. Transformational
leadership focuses on inspiring and motivating followers to exceed expectations through
vision, empowerment, and shared goals (Bass & Riggio, 2019). Transactional leadership,
on the other hand, is built on structure, rules, and rewards, emphasizing performance and
compliance. Servant leadership centers on prioritizing the needs of others, fostering a
culture of trust, and promoting personal and professional growth among followers
(Greenleaf, 2020). Democratic leadership encourages participation and collaboration in
decision-making, whereas situational leadership adapts to the demands of specific
circumstances or team needs. Authentic leadership emphasizes transparency, self-
awareness, and ethical integrity in guiding others.
