Types of Business Travel:

1. Incentive

Incentives are rewards that are offered to employees for meeting specific targets/goals.
There are numerous incentives that can be offered- e.g. short break, tickets to sporting
events, etc. Incentives are used by companies to increase motivation and performance-
thus, increasing sales/profits, improving sales and increasing staff morale. Incentives are
sometimes used to retain staff for companies that have a bad retention rate. Travel
agencies- e.g. Baldwin’s Travel- offer incentives to their staff to ensure that they are
motivated. There are multiple locations that incentive events can be held at, such as
sporting events; e.g. Ascot Races. Incentive events can take the form of corporate
hospitality events, or as a gift/money (the money is tax free). The typical client that
would attend an incentive event would be a hardworking/loyal employee that meets the
targets/goals set by the company. They may be invited to a Christmas Party, or be
offered a bonus.

2. Exhibitions and trade fairs

Exhibitions are multiple people with the same interest advertising their product. For
example, The World Travel Market (the largest travel exhibition). Tourist boards pay to
buy a floor space and then have to entice individuals (the general public, people within
the sector or people interest in the particular sector) that visit the exhibition to visit their
stands- this could be by providing samples, entertainment or leaflets. The World Travel
Market attracts visitors from overseas as well as the UK. It is a trade fair that provide an
opportunity for industry members to meet/conduct their business. Moreover, they
provide an opportunity for discussions on the latest developments within the industry.
Business clients may visit The World Travel Market on a business trip. Conversely, if an
exhibition changes its location it is often known as a Roadshow.

3. Conferences and meetings

Business clients would travel for conferences/meetings if they are not within close
proximity of their office. For example, business clients from London that have
meetings/conferences to attend in Sydney would have to travel to attend the meeting.
There are four main types of conferences/meetings:

- Political
- Business
- Educational and Academic
- Medical
4. Corporate events

Corporate events/hospitality is a specialist industry within travel and tourism. The main
focus of corporate hospitality is to provide events, hospitality and entertainment to
business clients. This can be offered as a reward to a customer (e.g. for placing business
with a company) or as an encouragement to other businesses (e.g. businesses that are
not existing customers). These events are ideal for companies to network and make
business contacts. As trends change, so do the locations that corporate hospitality
events are held at. The latest trend is for companies to choose unusual locations, so they
stand out. For example, some companies hire marquees at sports events (e.g.
Wimbledon) for invited guests to watch the sports. They are usually formal, black tie
events. Corporate hospitality events have an open bar, food and entertainment. A typical
client that would be invited to a corporate hospitality event would be a company that the
