1 Introduction
This portfolio assessment explores contemporary issues in media
and communication studies, drawing on both theoretical
perspectives and real-world examples. The first section focuses on
the concept of digital activism, with particular reference to recent
youth-led protests in Kenya, and examines the strategies used by
Generation Z as well as the related concepts of hacktivism, civil
disobedience, and slacktivism. The second section discusses the
intersection of media, development, and democracy by addressing
the concept of “Othering,” reflecting on the decolonisation of
African media and communication studies, and using the Thabo
Bester case study to highlight the role of public participation in
holding power to account. The third section analyses media
audiences by engaging with Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model
and applying relevant communication theories to explain media
choices in contemporary society.
