Chapters 1 and 2
WHAT IS BIOLOGY?
THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF LIFE ONE OF THE
NATURAL SCIENCES
-
HIERARCHIES OF ORGANIZATION OF LIFE
1. ORGANELLES (MOLECULES)
2. CELL.
3. TISSUE.
4. ORGAN.
5. ORGANISM
6. POPULATION.
7. ECOSYSTEM.
8. BIOSPHERE.
, Three domains of life
ORGANISMS ARE CURRENTLY DIVIDED INTO THREE DOMAINS
1. Bacteria
2. Archea
3. Eukarya
Bacteria-are a single celled prokaryotic microorganisms that lack of nucleus
and membrane bound organelles, they have DNA in a (usually circular
chromosome), a cell wall (often containing peptidoglycan) and reproduce mainly
by binary fission
They are Incredibly diverse some are helpful, (gut
microbiome, nitrogen fixation food production) while
others are harmful, causing infections like strep throat,
tuberculosis or UTIs
, Archea-are single celled prokaryotic microorganisms that lead bacteria,
lack and nucleus and membrane bound organelles
However they are genetically and well chemically distinct from bacteria their
cell wall do not contain peptidoglycan, and their membranes are made up of
uniquely lipids
Found in extreme environments, (Hot Springs Salt Lake, deep sea
events,) but also live in places like the human gut importantly no Archea
are known to cause human disease
In short Archea = prokaryotes that look like bacteria but are
chemically and genetically different, often extremophiles, and part of
the 3 domains of life
