names, shops ecc
It’s important to understand how people communicate in a
certain environment and time
The study of linguistic landscapes can inform us about
• Boundaries of language group
• Language policie
• Target for commercial purpos
• Ethnolinguistic vitalit
S TABLE SOCIAL MULTILINGUALISM:
Domain of use: settings and activities associated with settings in
which we have different codes
Diglossia: co-existence of two varieties (high, low) of a language
marked by a clear difference in status between them
High: prestigious, used by institution
Low: at home; everybody has an access to low variet
Being able to speak the high variety is a privilege, it depends on
income

the use of linguistic elements from more than one variety in a
conversation or text.
