, The Impact of Digitisation on Employee Wellness and Resilience in the Modern
Workplace: A Qualitative Exploration
1. Introduction
The digital era has fundamentally transformed the nature of work, with digitisation
becoming an inseparable feature of organisational life. Digitisation refers to the adoption
and integration of advanced technologies—such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud
computing, machine learning, data analytics, and virtual collaboration platforms—into
everyday business processes. These technologies are not merely supplementary tools
but have become central to how organisations operate, communicate, and compete in
the global economy.
While digitisation promises efficiency, productivity, and innovation, it also introduces
complex challenges that impact the workforce. Two key aspects of this impact are
employee wellness and resilience. Employee wellness encompasses the holistic
physical, psychological, and social well-being of individuals within the workplace.
Resilience, in turn, refers to the ability of employees to positively adapt to uncertainty,
disruptions, and ongoing technological change.
In today’s digitised work environment, wellness and resilience are deeply
interconnected. Employees are required not only to fulfil their job-related responsibilities
but also to continually adjust to technological changes that reshape work processes,
redefine job roles, and alter professional boundaries. The South African context further
highlights this dynamic, with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the COVID-19
pandemic accelerating digital adoption and normalising hybrid and remote work models.
While these changes create opportunities for flexibility and improved productivity, they
also increase risks such as technostress, digital inequality, and blurred work–life
boundaries.
This study explores the dual nature of digitisation—its capacity to improve workplace
efficiency and its potential to undermine employee wellness—while emphasising
resilience as a key competency for employees navigating the digital age. Understanding
