Workplace: A Qualitative Exploration
1. Introduction
The 21st century workplace has been profoundly reshaped by digitisation, which
involves the integration of advanced digital technologies into almost every aspect of
organisational life. Tools such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, big data
analytics, and online collaboration platforms are no longer optional additions but core
components of how modern organisations function. While digitisation has created
opportunities for efficiency, innovation, and competitiveness, it has also introduced new
pressures that directly affect employee wellness and resilience.
Employee wellness refers to the holistic physical, psychological, and social well-being of
individuals in the workplace, while resilience reflects the capacity of employees to adapt
positively in the face of stress, uncertainty, and change. In a digitised work environment,
these two aspects have become increasingly interlinked. Employees are required not
only to manage daily work demands but also to constantly adapt to technological shifts
that reshape job roles, communication processes, and work–life boundaries.
In South Africa, digitisation has been accelerated by the Fourth Industrial Revolution
(4IR) and more recently by the COVID-19 pandemic, which normalised remote and
hybrid work arrangements. This transformation has highlighted both the benefits of
technology (such as flexibility and productivity) and its drawbacks (such as
technostress, digital inequality, and blurred professional boundaries). Against this
backdrop, understanding the dual impact of digitisation on wellness and resilience is not
only academically significant but also practically essential for sustaining human capital
in the digital age.
