Task one
1.1 The first crime evident within the brief is domestic abuse. This falls under the umbrella term of
individualistic crimes. Domestic abuse can be defined as a pattern of coercive, threatening,
controlling behaviour which is between those who are within an intimate relationship to those who
have previously had an intimate relationship or those of family members within an intimate
relationship. A reason as to why this is made evident within the brief is due to the fact that Mr Jones
received ‘deep cuts’ on his arm from Mrs Jones as well as reportedly having suffered with being
‘attacked with a broken plate’. I know this is domestic abuse as of the fact that this is made evident
within domestic abuse, but domestic abuse can be in many different forms, such as psychological,
physical, emotional and financial. Domestic abuse can be classified as both a moral and criminal
act, so one example as the fact of it being criminal. We are all made aware of the fact that domestic
abuse is criminal due to laws implemented such as the Domestic Violence Act which is
implemented to protect domestic violence victims and potential victims, yet the argument as to
whether it is criminal is split as some households deem it acceptable to hit and smack their partners
in certain scenarios as such as catching them cheat, their moral judgement in this scenario, and so
on. Following on, despite the fact that the brief makes it evident that statistics such as 2/3 being
typical victims of domestic abuse as female which is correct within relationships mostly based that
power and female, yet victims really can depend and vary within relationships mostly based on the
power offender having within the couple. Fouer to this statistic, we learn and now to understand that
the typical offender is usually a male, this is because the one would assume males to be the
superior sex within a relationship reason. Because of this, even though the public awareness for
domestic violence is now on the increase, it is still the fact of matter that domestic abuse happens
within the household and therefore like is hard to detect, yet more domestic violence cases are
being reported, such as 850,000 police recordings as of 2018 which shows a huge increase. A real
life story would be Claire Woods who suffered domestic abuse from her partner in the secrecy of
their house, who was later found dead as a result of his harsh beatings.
A second crime notified within the brief is the moral crime of vagrancy. Moral crimes are usually
summarised with the definition of crimes with no official victim yet goes against the morale code of
society, the reason as to why there is no official victim is due to the fact the offender and victim tend
to be the same people. The more crime of vagrancy is evident within the brief through the statement
that Stephen is made ‘homeless’. Despite lack of public knowledge behind homeless is both
criminal and deviant as well as a most moral crimes, but for vagrancy in particular, under the 1784
law it states that any acts of vagrancy are illegal against the law meaning Stephen is committing a
crime, and despite this the crime is he is homeless as well as most moral crimes victims will be
labelled as less criminal and more deviant, this is because the act of Stephen sleeping rough can
be seen to directly effect anyone in particular. As Priot stated, the criminal and offending tend to be
the same people, such as to examples such as taking drugs and offending as prostitution are all
socioeconomic activities which both victimise the offender get be benifits from. The level of public
awareness for moral crimes is low, despite the fact that over 350,000 people within England are
homeless, awareness for moral crimes are less confident to effect anyone directly. An exmaple of a
moral crime would be the 2021 jailing of against a women who were jailed for the crime of fleeing
domestic abuse and being raped by another man who wasn’t her husband, as it was percieved as
being a moral crime. The typical victims for vagrancy tend to be men despite the fact that there
usually isn’t a victim for moral crimes, with other 70% of men being homeless in total of homeless
people.
