COMBINATORICS: A COMPREHENSIVE
GUIDE
INTRODUCTION TO COMBINATORICS
Combinatorics is the branch of mathematics concerned with counting,
arrangement, and selection of objects. It deals with determining the number of
possible ways to arrange or select items from a set, often under specific
constraints. This field is crucial not only in theoretical mathematics but also in
applied areas such as computer science, statistics, and physics.

For students preparing for competitive examinations like the International
Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), JEE Mains & Advanced, ISI Entrance Exam, and CMI
Entrance Exam, a solid foundation in combinatorics is indispensable. These exams
frequently feature problems that require clever counting techniques and a deep
understanding of combinatorial principles.

This book aims to provide a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the
world of combinatorics. Starting from basic counting principles, we will gradually
explore more advanced topics, illustrating each concept with detailed examples
and providing ample practice problems. Our goal is to build not just knowledge,
but also a strong intuitive understanding and problem-solving skills necessary to
tackle challenging combinatorial problems.

FUNDAMENTAL COUNTING PRINCIPLES
At the heart of combinatorics lie two fundamental principles that serve as the
building blocks for solving a wide array of counting problems: the Addition
Principle and the Multiplication Principle.

THE ADDITION PRINCIPLE

The Addition Principle states that if there are n ways to do one task and m ways to
do another task, and if these tasks are mutually exclusive (i.e., they cannot be done
at the same time), then there are n + m ways to do either task. This principle is
often associated with "OR" scenarios.

• Example 1: If you have 3 different routes to go from city A to city B and 2
different routes from city A to city C, then you have 3 + 2 = 5 choices to go
from city A to either city B or city C.

, • Example 2: A student can choose a project from either a list of 5 mathematics
projects or a list of 7 computer science projects. How many choices does the
student have? Answer: 5 + 7 = 12 projects.

THE MULTIPLICATION PRINCIPLE

The Multiplication Principle states that if there are n ways to do one task and m
ways to do another task, then there are n × m ways to do both tasks. This principle
applies when making a sequence of independent choices and is often associated
with "AND" scenarios.

• Example 1: If you have 4 shirts and 3 pairs of pants, you can create 4 × 3 = 12
different outfits.
• Example 2: How many 2-digit numbers can be formed using the digits 1, 2, 3,
4, and 5 if repetition is allowed? Answer: There are 5 choices for the first digit
and 5 choices for the second digit, so there are 5 × 5 = 25 possible numbers.

INTEGRATING BOTH PRINCIPLES

Many problems require the use of both principles in conjunction.

• Example 1: A menu offers 3 appetizers, 5 main courses, and 2 desserts. If a
customer wants to order either an appetizer or a main course, and also wants
a dessert, how many different meal combinations are possible? The customer
has (3 + 5) choices for the appetizer or main course, and 2 choices for dessert.
By the multiplication principle, there are (3 + 5) × 2 = 16 possible meal
combinations.

PERMUTATIONS
A permutation is an arrangement of objects in a specific order. The order in which
the objects are arranged is crucial; changing the order creates a new permutation.
We will explore different types of permutations, each with its own formula and
applications.

PERMUTATIONS OF DISTINCT OBJECTS

Consider arranging r objects chosen from a set of n distinct objects. The number of
such arrangements is denoted as P(n, r) and is calculated as:

P(n, r) = n! / (n - r)!

Derivation: For the first position, we have n choices. Once we've chosen the first
object, we have n-1 choices for the second position, then n-2 for the third, and so
