Question 1 (Chapter 4) [30 marks]
1.1 Who should be responsible for providing curriculum leadership within the
school context? What are the specific responsibilities and key actions that
should be associated with effective curriculum leadership for your subject(s) and
grade(s)?
(15 marks)
In the school setting, curriculum leadership is a shared responsibility but should
primarily lie with the Principal, Deputy Principal, Heads of Departments (HODs), and
experienced subject teachers. In practice, the HODs and subject coordinators should
take the lead in curriculum leadership because they have the expertise and are directly
involved with specific subjects and phases.
Effective curriculum leadership requires several critical responsibilities and actions:
1. Interpreting Curriculum Policies: Leaders need to interpret and communicate
curriculum policies, such as the Curriculum and Assessment Policy
Statement (CAPS), ensuring that all teachers understand the curriculum
expectations, standards, and objectives for their subjects and grades.
2. Developing Instructional Strategies: Curriculum leaders should guide teachers
in selecting appropriate instructional methods. For example, in my experience
teaching Grade 9 Natural Sciences, the HOD regularly assists in integrating
inquiry-based learning methods and practical experiments to improve learners'
understanding.
3. Curriculum Planning and Mapping: Leaders should coordinate the pacing of
the curriculum, ensure the sequencing of topics, and develop year plans and
assessment schedules that align with policy requirements.
