Question 1 (Chapter 4) [30 marks] Reflecting on your experience of implementing the curriculum for your respective subject(s) and grade(s) at your school, critically evaluate the role of curriculum leadership. Include the following in your discussion: • Who, in your opinion, should be responsible for providing curriculum leadership within the school context? What are the specific responsibilities and key actions that should be associated with effective curriculum leadership for your subject(s) and grade(s)? [15] (300-500 words) • How should curriculum leadership take place so that it enhances curriculum implementation and is supportive to teachers and learners? [15] (300-500 words) Refer to your textbook and other academic sources (journal articles or books) to support your statements. Question 2 (Chapter 6) [30 marks] A scholar and researcher called Sugata Mitra worked on a project called Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLEs) and on the School in The Cloud. The basic idea for SOLEs, is for the learners to work in a group of four (they choose their groups) on a single complex question. Each group needs an internet-enabled laptop to do the work. The groups are given a question such as “Why do we slip on wet surfaces?” or “Do trees breathe?” The learners are asked to give a presentation as a report back after a given time. Other than the instruction and the computers, they are largely left to answer the question on their own. The following PDF contains more information on what a SOLE is and how it can become a reality in classrooms: You can also watch the following video: 2.1 Briefly summarise the main aspects of SOLE activities. (10) (300-500 words) 2.2 Provide both advantages and disadvantages (strengths and weaknesses) of the SOLE activities. Include both teachers and learners in your discussion. (20) (500-1000 words) Question 3 (Chapter 7) [40 marks] Create a concept map on “Assessment for different purposes” (see Chapter 7 of your textbook). Please visit the module page for examples and more detail on concept maps. You may present this question as three separate concept maps or as a single concept map.

QUESTION 1

Curriculum Leadership in South African Schools: A Critical Evaluation

Introduction

Curriculum leadership plays a vital role in shaping the teaching and learning process within
South African schools. It refers to the ability of education leaders to guide, support, and
influence the planning, implementation, and review of the curriculum in a way that improves
learner achievement and promotes teacher development (Du Preez & Reddy, 2014). From
my experience as an educator, I have seen that effective curriculum leadership must be
participatory, context-sensitive, and aimed at both teacher support and learner development.
In many schools, however, curriculum leadership is still treated as a top-down function
dominated by school principals and heads of departments. While this structure provides
necessary coordination, it often stifles teacher innovation and collaboration. This reflection
discusses who should be responsible for curriculum leadership and how it should be
exercised to support implementation and learner outcomes. Academic literature and my own
classroom experiences provide the foundation for this analysis. Terms of use
