Antepartum
Signs of Pregnancy
• Presumptive (client said...)
o Fatigue
o N/V
o Amenorrhea – missing period
o Ǫuickening – fetal movement
o Breast tenderness
• Probable (Doctor)
o Hegars sign – softening of the lower uterine segment
o Goodells sign – softening of the cervix
o Chadwick sign – blue discoloration of cervix and vagina
o Positive pregnancy test
o Ballottement – fetal movement from pushing up against the cervix with 2
fingers.
Positive Signs of Pregnancy ****
• Ultrasound, transvaginal SEE
• Fetal Heart Tones (FHT) HEAR
• Fetal movement (quickening) FEEL
Pregnancy Testing
• Blood HCG 2 days after implantation
o Fertility drugs can cause false positive
• Urine test 42 days after 1st day of last menstrual period
o Promethazine can cause false negative

• Lactogenesis – formation of milk from a woman’s mammary gland
