The Self
Session Aims
Explore the structure and complexity of the self
Understand self-awareness and self-knowledge
Review key theories of self-regulation and self-comparison
Examine age and cultural influences on the self
What Is the Self?
People do not a single, fixed identity
Instead, multiple selves are shaped by different contexts, roles, and traits
Self-complexity: how many distinct self-concepts a person holds
Despite behavioural contradictions, people maintain a coherent sense of identity
Dominant Traits & Social Roles
Traits (e.g. caring, competitive, spontaneous) are activated differently depending on social roles. E.g.,
you might be reliable at work but spontaneous with friends.
