Amphojel (Antacids)
Indication: treatment of hyperacidity
MoA: neutralize and reduces acidity of gastric juices
Tox:
- constipation
- hypophosphatemia
- aluminum toxicity
- metabolic alkalosis
Nursing Interventions:
- monitor patients stools
- give with full glass of water
- max dose < 2 weeks
Atorvastatin
Lipitor (HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor)
Indication: control lipid levels (lower cholesterol)
MoA: inhibits HMG-CoA reductase to reduce cholesterol and
lipoprotein
Tox:
,- hepatotoxicity
- myopathy
Nursing Interventions:
- monitor liver function and lipid panels
- educate on diet and exercise changes
- measure lipid levels after 2-4 weeks
Atenolol
Tenormin (Beta-Blockers)
Indication: treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and
acute MI
MoA: blocks beta, adrenergic receptors to decrease cardiac
output, oxygen consumption, and renin excretion
Tox:
- erectile dysfunction
- hypotension
- bradycardia
Nursing Interventions:
- question admin in diabetic patients
Altaplase
tPA (Thrombolytics)
,Indication: treatment of VTE
MoA: causes fibrinolysis
Tox:
- bleeding
Nursing Interventions:
- limit venipuncture and injections
- apply pressure to bleeding wounds
Apaxiban
Eliquis (Factor Xa Inhibitor)
Indication: reduce risk of stroke, DVT and PE
MoA: inhibits factor Xa to decrease thrombus development
Tox:
- bleeding
Nursing Interventions:
- monitor closely for severe bleeding
- discontinue at least 48 hrs prior to a surgical procedure
Furosemide
Lasix (Loop Diuretic)
Indication: excretion of excess fluid volume to reduce edema
and decrease blood pressure MoA: inhibits reabsorption of
, water and sodium in the loop of Henle causing an increase in
urine formation and increased output
Tox:
-hypokalemia
-dehydration
-tinnitus
Nursing Interventions:
- monitor patients weight during use to assess fluid loss
- take pulse and BP prior to administration
- monitor electrolytes (hypokalemia)
Chlorthiazide
Diuril (Thiazide Diuretic)
Indication: reduce blood pressure by reducing fluid volume in
the blood
MoA: inhibits reabsorption of sodium in kidneys distal tubules
which may promote excretion of chloride, sodium and water
Tox:
-hypokalemia
-dehydration
Nursing Interventions:
- monitor patients’ weight during use to assess fluid loss
-take pulse and bp prior to administration
