Cardiac reserve is the difference between a person's maximum and resting cardiac output. Increases with fitness, decreases with disease (can decrease to 0 in some disease states) What are the three variables that govern stroke volume? Preload (I.e. end diastolic volume, ~120 mL) Contractility Afterload (resistance (HTN, aortic stenosis))
