, QUESTION 1

1.1. (2 ANSWERS PROVIDED)

Ubuntu, as a philosophy of communal living and interconnectedness, strongly
shapes the way people in my community treat and support one another. Growing up,
I witnessed how neighbours looked out for each other’s children as their own. When
someone in the community lost a loved one, people gathered to offer food, comfort,
and assistance without expecting anything in return. During celebrations like
weddings or traditional ceremonies, everyone contributed—either by cooking,
cleaning, or donating resources. This collective responsibility reflects the Ubuntu
principle: ―Motho ke motho ka batho‖ (a person is a person through others). Ubuntu
encourages compassion, empathy, and mutual respect, making each person feel
valued and supported. If a household experienced hardship, others were quick to
lend a hand, whether through emotional support or practical help. Ubuntu fosters a
sense of belonging and accountability, reinforcing the idea that one’s well-being is
tied to the well-being of others in the community.

OR

In my community, the idea of Ubuntu is deeply rooted in how we treat and support
one another. People embrace the belief that ―Motho ke motho ka batho‖ – a person
is a person through others – and this is evident in everyday life. For example,
neighbours regularly share food, assist each other during funerals, and contribute to
fundraising for school fees or emergencies. If a child misbehaves, any adult has the
responsibility to discipline and guide them, reflecting the idea that every child
belongs to the community. Community members gather for traditional events,
weddings, and communal work such as cleaning the streets or fixing shared
facilities. Ubuntu fosters respect, empathy, and solidarity. It promotes collective
survival and social harmony. This interconnectedness creates a strong sense of
belonging and responsibility, where success and well-being are not personal
achievements alone, but shared by the whole community. Ubuntu is the soul of our
communal life.
