My syllabus changes somewhat from one semester to the next, but the syllabus
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
below is the version I used in Fall Semester, 2010. (However, the textbook
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
for that course was the 6th edition.) I think it‘s important for a syllabus to
g f g f g f g f g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
include a brief description of the course, as well as the goals. From the first
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
page of the syllabus, students should be able to understand the general scope of
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f gf g f g f g f g f
the course.

issue, which focus on topics related to women and gender, such as critical

On the first day of class, students also receive a description of the Psychology

The purpose of this course is to examine the lives of girls and women. We

gender comparisons, women and work, love relationships, sexuality, women‘s
g f g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f
physical and mental health, violence against women, and women in later

about girls, women, and gender in North America.

As the course instructor, I‘m hopeful that each of you will work toward the following
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
goals:
g f
1. To understand the relevant information about the lives of girls and
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
women—as well as gender—with a particular emphasis on the
g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
complexity of the issues.
g f g f g f g f
2. To develop critical-thinking skills, so that you can evaluate both the
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
research in professional journals and information described in the
g f g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f
popular media.
g f g f
3. To know how to design your own psychology research project, to conduct
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
the research, and to write an appropriately professional summary of your
g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
own research, emphasizing the potential methodological flaws and strengths
g f g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f
in your study.
g f g f g f
4. To explore your own ideas and attitudes about gender, appreciating that we do
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
not need to be constrained by our culture‘s traditional gender roles.
g f g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
5. To appreciate the inequalities that many individuals face, based on social
g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
categories other than gender. These categories include age, disability,
g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, social class, and country of residence.
g f g f gf g f g f g f g f g f g f g f
We will also consider some information about inequalities in other
g f g f g f g f gf g f g f g f g f g f
cultures, outside North America.
