Pest - a plant or animal detrimental to man; one that pesters or annoys
Pest Management Principle - Pest management rather than pest eradication.
Natural Controls - Measures that control or destroy pests without dependence upon
humans for continuous success. I.e. Climatic factors, topographic factors, and naturally
occurring predators.
Applied controls - Methods under the control of humans. Used when pests cannot be
controlled by natural controls. I.e. Mechanical, physical, cultural, genetic, biological, legal, and
chemical.
Mechanical controls - Subcategory of Applied controls. I.e hand destruction, traps,
screens, nets, fences.
Physical Controls - Subcategory of Applies Controls. Manipulation of water, humidity, and
temperature. Use of electric shock, light, or radiant energy. Physical controls kill pests, disrupt
their lifestyle or making living unfavorable.
Cultural Controls - Applied Controls. Routine management practices that prevent pests
from developing. I.e. Rotating crops, tilling soil, varying time of planting, destroying crop
residue, pruning, thinning, and fertilizing. Disrupt the pattern between the pest and host.
Carried out as normal operations.
Genetic Controls - Applied Controls. Involve plants & animals resistant to pests. Breeding
partnered with gene manipulation.
Biological Controls - Applied Controls. Introduction of parasites/predators of pest species.
Legal Controls - Applied Controls. Limit development of pest population by restricting
human activities.
Chemical Controls - Applied control. Natural or synthetic chemicals called pesticides that
kill, attract, repel, or control growth of pest plants, animals, or microorganisms.
Avicides - To control pest birds
Bactericides - To control bacteria
