A.1: Strengths and Weaknesses of “Unit of Instruction: Division”

The variation of activities provide an equitable educational opportunity for all learning needs of

students. This a great strength of these plans. The incorporation of different activity types daily

allow students to practice and apply concepts learned in different and authentic ways while

demonstrating their learning in a way that they are good at. Worksheets one day while the next

day has a technology base game allows all students to demonstrate their learning. On the other

hand, only providing one activity a day can disengage a learner due to only having one way for

the student to demonstrate their knowledge. Adding in a cooperative strategy activity that

allows for students to speak up and participate could provide an additional opportunity for

students to demonstrate their knowledge outside of the worksheet. The fact is students might

get discouraged if they are not engaged in the activity for the day and when learning is not

demonstrated for the day the teacher cannot quickly correct any misinformation that the

student has in understanding the concept. On day one for students they are working with word

problems within the summative assessment. Allowing students access to another way to show

mastery of the skill for the summative assessment will provide a greater range of quantitative

data for students who struggle with the basic worksheet.

Outlining the expectations and creating a plan for the different types of practice is a

strength for this Unit design. Informing students of your end goal while informing them of how

they will be achieving it will aid in the completion of the lesson and help to boost engagement.

Clear boundaries allows for a positive learning environment that can support all learners.

An overall weakness in this document is the “Accommodations” section. It is great that

students will be groups with others who are showing stronger skills however this does not

always meet the learners needs and can add an unfair burden to students showing mastery as

they may feel as they are having to support their peers in the learning of the concept but might
