Question 1.
Critically analyse the key factors that led to Barbara’s job dissatisfaction after
being transferred from the neurological ward to the operating room. (6)
To answer this question, you need to compare the neurological ward and the operating
room tasks while also considering (1) the nature of Barbara’s tasks and responsibilities
in the operating room versus the neurological ward, (2) the mismatch between
Barbara’s initial expectations and the reality of her role in the operating room.
Based on the provided case study, several key factors contributed to Barbara's job
dissatisfaction after her transfer from the neurological ward to the operating room.
These factors can be critically analysed by comparing the two roles and considering
the mismatch between her initial expectations and the reality of the operating room
environment.
Comparison of Roles: Neurological Ward vs. Operating Room
Tasks and Responsibilities
Neurological Ward: Barbara's role involved a wide range of tasks, including putting
in and monitoring IVs, checking patient charts, providing care, food, and medication,
performing dressing changes and bed baths, addressing patients' questions and
concerns, participating in after-surgery care, consulting on pain and symptom
management, walking after surgery, and coordinating home care (Eliot, 2020).
Operating Room: Her tasks in the operating room were significantly more limited. On
rare occasions, she would put in catheters and position patients. Primarily, her role
involved basically following the doctors' instructions during surgery3 and standing
around waiting for instructions from the surgeon. If no operations were scheduled, she
had little (if any) work to do.
Patient Interaction and Relationship:
Neurological Ward: Barbara enjoyed her daily personal interaction with the
patients. She had time to get to know patients and participate in their care. Patients
would convey words of gratitude.0717513144
