Exploring Teachers’ Experiences in Implementing Inclusive Education in South
African Schools

Inclusive education has become a global priority in the quest to provide equitable,
high-quality education for all learners, regardless of ability, socio-economic status,
language, or background. Grounded in human rights and social justice principles,
inclusive education promotes the full participation of all learners in mainstream
educational settings. In the South African context, inclusive education is
enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (1996), which
guarantees the right to basic education for every individual and prohibits
discrimination on any grounds. Despite policy advancements and national
commitments, the effective implementation of inclusive education continues to
face several challenges at the school and classroom levels. One of the most critical
and often under-explored components of this process is the lived experience of
teachers, who are the key agents in making inclusion a reality.
Following South Africa’s democratic transition in 1994, the education system was
reformed to address the inequalities of apartheid and to create an inclusive, non-
discriminatory framework. This transformation was formally introduced through
