Endocrine Minimal Requirements for Lab
Identify Structure and Name Function
I. Models
A. Know the following:
1. Identify the endocrine organs
2. Know their endocrine cells forming the endocrine organs
3. Know the main hormone secreted by the endocrine organs, including the
hormones secreted by their cells (example, insulin is secreted by the pancreas,
and specifically by the beta cells of the pancreas)
4. Know the target of their hormones
5. Study these endocrine organs:
i. Brain (midsagittal)
a. Hypothalamus
b. Pituitary gland (hypophysis) and infundibulum
c. Pineal gland
ii. Other models (torso, wall mounts, free standing, etc.):
a. Pituitary gland
b. Thyroid gland
c. Parathyroid gland
d. Thymus
e. Heart
f. Pancreas
g. Adrenal glands
h. Kidneys
i. Gonads (testes and ovaries

II. Histology
A. Know the following:
1. Identify the endocrine organ in the microscope slide
2. Identify the endocrine cells
3. Know the hormone secreted by the cells
4. Study the following microscope slides:
i. Anterior pituitary lobe (pars distalis)
a. If properly stained: acidophils; basophils
ii. Posterior pituitary lobe (pars nervosa)
a. Pituicytes
iii. Thyroid gland
a. Follicles filled with colloid
b. Follicular cells
c. Parafollicular cells (C cells)
iv. Thyroid/Parathyroid glands (focus on parathyroid)
a. Chief (principal) cells [small cells]
