Modernisation Theory: Developed in the mid-20th century, this theory suggests
that societies progress through a series of linear stages from 'traditional' to
'modern' by adopting Western values, industrialisation, and capitalism.
Decolonial Theory: Emerging in the late 20th century as a response to colonial
legacies, decolonial theory critiques the Eurocentric view of development and
advocates for indigenous knowledge, local autonomy, and alternative
development models.
2. How Decolonial Theory Challenges Modernisation Theory
Modernisation theory assumes Western models of development are universally
applicable, while decolonial theory argues that this approach disregards local
histories and cultures.
Decolonial theory challenges the idea that traditional societies are ‘backward’
and instead promotes diverse, context-specific development paths.
3. Are African Countries Developed or Developing?
Developing: Many African countries face economic disparities, infrastructure
