Course objectives:
- To add knowledge of the workfield of a Medical Psychologist as a scientist-practitioner
- To evaluate the status quo of Medical Psychology research and its importance
- To discuss the role of Medical Psychology (theory and research) in the advancement of (general)
health
Learning Objectives
⇒ The overarching goal of this course is: Students will learn how to approach challenges in medical
psychology from a scientist-practitioner perspective.
⇒ After this course, students will be able to.
1. Integrate theory, research, and clinical practice within the field of Medical Psychology
2. Evaluate the current state-of-the art of medical psychology research and use this knowledge in
medical science
3. Give recommendations for overcoming important barriers within medical psychology and how
other sciences can be used in finding solutions to overcoming these barriers
4. Have the skill to discuss the role of medical psychology in the advancement of national and
global health
5. Explain and discuss the complexity of (lifetime) health behaviors and disease management.

, Lecture 1: The field of medical psychology
Summary ➔ Dutch hospitals; over the past decades, the number of psychologists working in a medical
setting has increased.
- Clinical psychologists are now full members of the medical team.
- In order to enhance the development of the field a number of issues has to be addressed,
including a full adaptation of the biopsychosocial model and patient-centered research.
- In this lecture students will learn about the essential role of solid theory research in medical
psychology and related fields such as behavioral medicine, health psychology and psychosomatic
medicine in order to promote the clinical and public health applications of this field.

What is medical psychology?
⇒ The field that aims to understand how biological, behavioral, psychological and social factors
influence health and illness (and vice versa)
- Het is niet één discipline maar een integratieveld van biologische, gedrags- en psychische
factoren
⇒ Illnesses related to psychological and behavioral factors include heart disease, cancer, diabetes,
stroke, HIV/AIDS, etc. → all diseases have a psychological component
⇒ The term “medical psychology" is often used interchangeably with the terms "behavioral
medicine," “health psychology“ and “psychosomatic medicine”
Workfield of the Medical Psychologist:
- Hospital ⇒ treatment and/or research
- Specialized Mental Health (Specialistische GGZ)
- Primary care
- University
- Research institute (e.g., NIVEL, Trimbos)
Career
⇒ The title “ Psycholoog” is not protected by Dutch law since 1993
⇒ “NIP Psychologist” has a University Degree + 1 year experience.
⇒ “GZ-Psychologen“ = BIG registratie (equivalent to APA licensed psychologist) → Wet Beroepen in de
Individuele Gezondheidszorg
⇒ “Klinisch Psycholoog” (and “Klinisch Neuropsycholoog”) another 4 yr
⇒ Separate BIG registration for “Psychotherapist”
1. Het garandeert kwaliteit.
2. Beroepsorganisaties houden de kraan dicht waardoor mensen die goed opgeleid zijn niet krijgen
dat ze geen baan kunnen vinden.
De BAPD haal je tijdens de masteropleiding → Basis Aantekening Psychodiagnostiek → wij worden
opgeleid tot diagnostici
, How to get to a Medical Psychologist?
GP = general practitioner
POH-GGZ = Praktijkondersteuning Huisarts Geestelijke Gezondheidszorg (2008)
Als Medisch Psycholoog gaat het er vooral om dat je de taal leert spreken van het ziekenhuis. Het gaat er
niet om dat je een cardioloog wordt maar het gaat erom dat je weet wat er over gaat.
Most common referrals:

1. Intake interview and assessment
2. Short term treatment (individual) → Kan revalidatie zijn (dus binnen het ziekenhuis) maar ook op
andere gebieden zoals gedragsstoornissen, psychosociaal gedrag etc.
3. Group therapy

- Mechanisms
- Outcomes
- Mortality/disease onset or progression
- Intermediate (blood pressure, lipids)
- Disability/work-resumption

dan juist dan ziek worden. Hoe komt dat nou? → Dat soort dingen worden onderzocht.
- Mismatch tussen ernst van objectieve ziekten en ervaren klachten van patiënten.
