• Motivation – the wants or needs that direct behavior toward a goa
• Intrinsic motivation – motivation based on internal feelings rather
than external rewards
• Extrinsic motivation – motivation that arises from external factors o
rewards

• It’s rare to classify our motives to do anything as being purely intrin
or extrinsic… often it’s a combination of the two
• Often there’s a shift from one dominant motivation to another
• Think of your classes
• In the beginning of the semester, you might have been more driven to com
to class to learn about psychology.
• But as time went on and the semester progressed, you may have lost a bit
interest and are completing the work because the desire to pass the class
earn the course credits are pushing you to do assignments you aren’t thril
about…

Dangerous
• Unfortunately, extrinsic motivation can be very demotivating
• Research suggests that those who are originally intrinsically motiva
to do something (like baking), lose that motivation when extrinsic
reward is added to the equation
