Choice of distribution:
• Binomial distribution: You look at the number of successes, eg number of items you have
good when gambling on 20 items with 4 alternatives
• Negative-binomial distribution: You look at the number of trials required for the r-th success,
eg number of women before you have the fourth man
• Poisson distribution: The number of successes in a continuous interval, eg number of visitors
per hour on a website, because that varies per hour (one hour 80, other hours 90 visitors)
• Normal: Ellis indicates in the lecture that this is of little use to you, because you might as well
do a normal GLM.
The correct distribution is therefore a poisson distribution.
