, Abstract
Objective: To examine the associations between the personality of a child, the parent-child
relationship and parenting behaviours. Method: In total, 574 children from 10-14 years old
(M= 12.02: SD=.77years) participated in this cross-sectional study. The children completed
several questionnaires measuring their personality, the relationship with their parents, and the
parenting practices of their parents. Results: The results show that a high degree of three of
the Big Five shells associate with authoritative parenting. A low level of four of the Big Five
scales is associated with an authoritarian upbringing. Authoritarian parenting is related to
support and negative interaction of both father and mother. Authoritative parenting is linked
to support from father and mother and is linked to negative interactions with father.
Regarding the level of support a link is found for four of the Big Five scales. The degree of
negative interaction interacts with two of the Big Five scales. Analyses show a significant
difference between father and mother for all the five personalities (both high and low). The
average score on support and negative interaction turns out to be higher for the mother than
the father, a few exceptions considered. Conclusion: The findings of this research look very
promising for theory and practice. Implications of the results are discussed, as well as
suggestions for follow-up studies.
