KBCC- Nur 18 Medications Exam
Study Guide
Calcium carbonate -Electrolyte- - Answer Check calcium levels. Used for patients at risk
for osteoporosis. They might have osteopenia (decrease in the amount of bone mineral
density (BMD)). Side effects- constipation. Monitor BM.
Potassium (KCL) -Electrolyte- mEq/L - Answer Check KCL levels. Lose KCL due to
prolonged diarrhea. PO, IV. PO with or after meals because it promotes GI irritation. If IV
don't have to mix it.
CaptoPRIL (Capoten) -Ace inhibitor- - Answer All PRIL-protects Kidney. Angiotensin,
lowers blood pressure. Sometimes taken for diabetes or kidney disease and not for
hypertension. Side-effects- develop cough. Assess vital signs, KCL level because it can
elevate KCL level.
Docusate sodium (Surfactant) - Laxative- - Answer May not have a BM same day. 2-3
days, decreases surface tension, lets water soften stool. MI patients cannot strain
because their heart rate decreases. PO, rectal.
RosuvaSTATIN (Crestor)-Cholesterol- - Answer All STATIN- cholesterol. Monitor HDL
and LDL. Given at night because cholesterol produces more at night. Reduces risk of
stroke, myocardial infarction and re-vascularization. Use cautiously if patient has a
history of liver disease, renal impairment. Evaluate cholesterol and triglyceride levels,
HDL, and LDL levels.
Metformin (Glucophage)-Anti-diabetic- - Answer Oral hypoglycemia (reduce circulating
glucose level), works with liver to decrease amount of glucose absorbed in small
intestine and has nothing to do with insulin production. Check glucose level and liver
function test. Extended release medication (give at evening with meal). PO only. Assess
for hypoglycemic reactions (abd pain, sweating, hunger, weakness, dizziness,
headache, tremor, tachycardia, anxiety). Check glucose level before administering.
Ferrous Sulfate-Iron supplements- Anti-anemics - Answer Give with vitamin C tablet or
food containing vitamin C. Z-track only IM. give with empty stomach. Monitor stool
(black tar). Causes constipation. Check hemoglobin levels.
Levetiracetam (Keppra)-Anticonvulsant(seizure)- - Answer PO. Seizure related to
dementia. Fatigue, drowsiness, affects sleep. Monitor Liver and Kidney function. If
patient has liver disease do not administer. Check white and red blood count because it
can cause it to decrease. Monitor if patient is having less seizures. Monitor for safety.
Amlodipine (Norvasc)- calcium channel blocker- - Answer PO. Assess for edema.
Lowers BP, produces vasodialation in the peripheral. HTN, cardiomyopathy, angina
(ischemic chest pain). Check BP.
