Tempest Quotes
Revenge:
Act 1:
Before hatred ate my heart / there was music,” - Caliban
Caliban Before Prospero came to the island. Caliban experienced happiness through his
mother. However, after Prospero took over, Caliban only focused on getting his vengeance.
This island’s mine by Sycorax my mother, Which thou tak’st from me.”
This also implies C revenge on P and his want for vengeance.

‘The king’s son have I landed by himself’
-Ariel a
Prospero split Alonso’s son Ferdinand from Sebastian during the tempest putting the
impression upon Alonso that his son has drowned this shows how he wanted Alonso to feel
the pain and loss Prospero felt when he was banished from his homeland. This was an
emotionally cruel act of revenge.

‘Thou hast done well, fine Ariel’ Prospero act 1 s
When Prospero arranges marriage between F and M, he does it for an ulterior motive. The
marriage will benefit P to become duke of Milan again. Therefore, he is only setting M up
for his own benefit and to get vengeance on Alonso by using his own son.

‘Rapt in secret studies’- Prospero
Prospero grew distance from his king down due to his magical studies by doing so this
allowed Alonso to gain power.

Prospero says this ‘awakened an evil nature’ in Alonso therefore making him power hungry
and eventually he got rid of P. This act of overthrowing P not only enraged him by evokes an
evil revenge.

PROSPERO. But are they, Ariel, safe?
ARIEL. Not a hair perished. On their sustaining garments not a blemish”

This conversation between Prospero and Ariel clearly shows that Prospero has no real
intention of hurting Alonso, Antonio, and Sebastian because he easily could have had his
vengeance by disposing of them during the storm, he used to bring them to the island. This
also shows that Prospero has a plan and sees his enemies as his only option to return to
Italy and a better life for himself and Miranda as a form of revenge.

, Act 2:
‘These be fine things, and if they be not sprites. That’s a brave god and bears celestial
liquor. I will kneel to him.’-Caliban

Caliban’s desire for revenge is shown by his desperation to make himself obey the first
humans that he meets.

"Look how well my garments sit upon me." Sebastian is convinced, and they agree to kill
both Alonso and Gonzalo that very moment as Antonio begins to plant an idea in Sebastian's
mind. He suggests that Sebastian has long cherished a secret hope to become king in
Alonso's place. – power and control

Do not torment me! O!"
Every noise is thought to be a spirit, sent by Prospero to torture him therefore instilling fear
in C making him want to seek revenge for his mistreatment.

‘My strong imagination sees a crown / Dropping upon thy head’-antonio to seb
Ant tells seb to kill Alonso and he persuades Sebastian to betray his brother, for revenge of
being in power.

Act 3:
"I am your wife, if you will marry me; if not, I'll die your maid" -Miranda
Ferdinand readily agrees to marry her. Prospero blesses their love and secretly expresses his
approval of the marriage as his plan to get revenge has fallen into place.

‘I will kill this man [Prospero]. His daughter and I will be King and Queen kill this man
[Prospero]. His daughter and I will be King and Queen . . . and Trinculo and thyself
[Caliban] shall be viceroys”
-Stephano
Caliban has successfully planted the idea in Stephanos head to kill P therefore instilling his
revenge against him. Caliban urges Stephano to destroy Prospero and take what belongs to
him, including his daughter Miranda.

"If thy Greatness will,/Revenge it on him, for I know thou dar'st." - Caliban also promises
that if S kills Prospero "Thou shalt be lord of it, and I'll serve thee." By mentioning the
beauty of Miranda, Caliban further ensnares Stephano into doing his bidding.
