Egypt wants treasure back:
● The rosetta stone
● It was the most important egyptian artifact ever unearthed
● The stone was engraved with messages in ancient greek and two hieroglyphics scripts
● Originally found by napoleon
● Stonehenge
● The stone is not shown to the public therefore the people of egypt feel like it was stolen
from them ( stole their ability to connect with the past)
● Exhibit open 2012 for 3 months
Personal comments/thoughts : It's so refreshing to really learn about the rosetta stone
because I’ve heard about it being very important to history, but never knew the reason why. I
stand with the man in this video that preaches for the stones to be viewed by the public because
I think the rosetta stone is extraordinary. It was carved with one of the first messages being
written in ancient Greek and two hieroglyphic scripts. It’s so crazy to see that a form of
communication can still be understood today even though it was written thousands of years ago.
Egyptian Art pt 1 :
● Think of pyramids
● Desire something beyond this world
● Rosetta stone
● Written images called pictographs, images of animals and people
● Even of symbols called hieroglyphics
● Translated in the 19th century
● “Dissecting” culture
● Palette of king Narmer
● Something that was ceremonial
● Narmer unified upper and lower egypt
● Black eye liner, black eye makeup to help with the sun glare
● Climate is sunny and hot
● Understanding of a narrative
● Stories being told
● King Narmer in egyptian profile
● Front of the palette clear
● Raising arm with aggression
● Image of the ruler
● He is powerful, threatening , he is victorious
● The tiny person next to him is supposed to represent a servant
● Holding his shoes means he can walk on holy ground, he’s a hero
● Images where feet are elevated to show they’re able to walk wherever they want or on
the holy ground
● Pictorial symbol
● Hawthor Goddess
● Anytime you have a present God or goddess, the suggestion is that they’re are
witnessing and supporting whatever is going on
● Symbols of unification

, ● Animals intertwine
● Powerful and destructive
● Lack of realism
● King is always large
● Curly ring in his head to represent lower egypt
● Servants holding up standards
● Row of bodies with no heads?
● Beheaded?
● Shove their head between their legs
● Realistic part is not important, the symbolic part is
● Documenting egyptian society
● The stepped pyramid
● King Djose
● The steps get smaller getting to the top
● Someone dies, and they create a city
● What is the deal with creating these pyramids ?
● The inside is so beautifully decorated
● Show a paradise
● Land og glory, fruitful
● Why leave, food and riches after the pyramid has been sealed off
● Our “ka”
● Inside was very lively
● Egyptian mummification
● Deceased body has organs removed and put into jars
● Preserved in jars
● Body is dried with salt, sprayed with perfume, wiped with oil and wrapped up, put in
different coffins
● In the means to try to preserve history and a person forever
● Death is joyful, enter a new dimension
Personal comments/thoughts: This video contains a lot of informative ways that egypt
sculptures were read and understood by people who found them and the theories behind the
making of them. The creation of pyramids is so beautiful itself. I think my favorite part of the
video due to it being so shocking was to see the egypt mummification. How their organs were
removed and they did certain rituals to the body to preserve it.
Egyptian Art pt 2 :
● A mountain points to the sky and it brings one closer rather than away from earth
● Pyramids at Giza
● Refined triangular shape
● Sun God Ra (polytheistic)
● Each area of egypt has a god or goddess ( they have a priest)
● Polish limestone on the exterior, sun reflection
● 3 pyramids were made, 3 pharaohs
● Crossing a river = crossing into a afterlife
● 250 ft tall, 750 ft wide
