Paraprotein instead of paratroopers

- Coined the term paraprotein: protein that appear in the blood as a result of cancer
- Laid groundwork for discovery of monoclonal antibodies
Injured in an Allied bombing raid on Berlin, then killed by another bombing raid while recovering
during the last winter of WWII.
Immunological Disorders

• Hypersensitivity/Allergy
• Type I – Immediate
• Type II – Cytotoxic
• Type III – Immune Complex
• Type IV – Cell Mediated (delayed)
Immunodeficiency
- absence or deficiency of immune cells
• Primary: born with it AKA congenital
- impairment of thymus or pairs patches
- Lack of T-cells or B-cells or both
- David Vetter: “The Bubble Boy”, born with Severe Combined
Immunodeficiency lacking both cells
• Secondary: caused by illness: radiation poisoning
- Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Multiple myeloma; 3rd most common blood cancer
Blood protein electrophoresis
- take blood sample, let it clot,, put it in gel, electrophoresis,
• Type I - Immediate
• Anaphylaxis – Greek, ana- “against” phylax “keeper, watcher”.
• Immediate, inappropriate response to an allergen.
