Chapter 18 – continued
Testing theories social learning, socialization
- Difficult: we hardly have the methodological capacity to measure larger trends at the
higher level of analyses with any reliability.
o These theories take place during a long period of time a lot of experiences
can change your behaviour. LONG TERM + REPEATED EXPOSURE
difficult to prove.
o Questions about how big these effects are etc.
- Effects are often inconsistent and could cancel each other out.
- Media are unlikely to be the MAIN driving force of fundamental long-term change
but the consequences of rapid and penetrating diffusion of information should not be
underestimated.
ESSAY
Prisoners experiment: conducted in US half of group was conducted as prisoners and the
we use experiences of other people (not only colleagues and friend, but also media)
LONG TERM MEDIA EFFECTS.
Involve your own experience or knowledge in the answer. Show off your knowledge by
covering the theories and models that we covered in class.
We are programmed to obey people with power. Why are we so obedient?
Frankfurter school people are programmed to be quiet, etc. to be obedient to people
with power. People with power want to keep that power and use the media to keep that and
keep us quiet. When we not obey, we place ourselves out of the group fear of being out
the group, being isolated.
Chapter 19 – News, Public Opinion and Political Communication
News learning: news does not set out to teach us anything, but we still we learn from it.
Although specific news topics change constantly, the news repeatedly bombards us with
recurring themes and frames.
Relatively high effect, compared to other forms of content, news has high level of:
o Realism and Believability
o Attention-gaining
o Relevance
o Actuality
