P49. Ex 9

P50. Ex 1
Truck operators are not happy with the self-driving systems because they will get laid off.
New technologies allow drivers to operate commercial vehicles without any pedals or
steering wheel.

Ex 4
1. Why are software companies taking an interest in buses and lorries?
o Because of opportunities in busses and lorries (public transport and long-haul
freight), which are ahead of passenger cars in terms of self-driving systems.
Technology development in these areas will be used in passenger cars.
2. What words are used in the text instead of ‘buses’ and ‘lorries’?
o Buses = public transport
o Lorries = long-haul freight (vehicles) / commercial vehicles
3. What was the focus of the IAA commercial vehicles show?
o Logistics and efficiency
4. Why is self-driving technology easier to develop in buses and lorries than in cars?
o Because commercial vehicles can be tested in areas far away from humans so
people’s lives are not put at risk.
5. 2 ways self-driving technology will benefit the automotive sector:
o Technology used in lorries ( to improve predictive cruise-control systems) will
be used in other areas, including self-driving cars.
o We will probably see big advances in self-driving technology because
investments can reduce truck operators’ costs

2

, 6. How will the work of lorry drivers change in the future?
o The driver will be able to get out of the truck and rest while it’s unloaded and
loaded.
o Drivers will be given new tasks to plan routs or process shipping documents
and will work more as logistics managers
7. What is special about Mercedes-Benz’s new delivery van?
o It’s battery-powered. It doesn’t have pedals or a steering wheel. It is equipped
with drones.
8. What will happen to commercial vehicles in the near future?
o There will be more changes to trucks than in the last 120 years.

Extra, driverless technology
1) What does the tech company Five do?
a. It’s kind of like a driving school for the driverless cars
b. It runs endless simulations to ensure that driverless car tech responds safely
to challenges on the roads.
2) What does the firm dRisk do?
a. They built the world’s largest virtual library of edge cases, that way creating
the first true driving test for autonomous vehicles.
3) What is the main problem for dRisk? How are they trying to counter that problem?
a. People don’t tend to report near misses. Now, they have a fleet of
autonomous cars driving around the UK clocking up hours of experience,
which they then all use in order to make them better drivers.
4) What does the company Wayve do?
a. Built the brain of the cars, using machine learning.
5) What is the MoralMachine?
a. Puts you in front of a couple moral decisions.
b. It’s a game set up by MIT scientists, to explore how humans think driverless
cars should react in various scenarios.
