Themes are unifying ideas that are repeated or developed throughout a literary or
artistic work.
• Classical-balance, truth, polytheism, democracy
• Renaissance-science, rationalism, humanism
• Neoclassical-skepticism, order, belief in a hands-off supreme being
• Romantic-nationalism, revolution, passion
• Realist-Darwin, doubt, industrialization

5. Identify and describe two universal themes: love and the hero.
• Love: Eros-erotic love Agape-platonic; selfless; on a spiritual level. The
pursuit of passion over power
• Hero: an individual overcomes stupendous feats against seemingly
insurmountable and antagonistic forces.

6. Define the central concepts in the humanities: humanism, myth, monomyth, beauty, aesthetic
experience, and archetype.
• Humanism: the study of the creative and intellectual contributions of all
human cultures or an ethical system that centers on humans and their values
and emphasizes reason and the
scientific method.
• Myths: traditional stories of a people or culture that serve to explain
some natural phenomenon, human origin and customs, or religious
rites
• Beauty: qualities that give pleasure to the senses.
• Aesthetic experience: when beauty inspires a feeling of pleasure. The
stimulus may be visual, auditory, or literary.
• Monomyth: the hero’s journey, a basic pattern that is found in many
narratives from around the world
• Archetypes: age-old models of classification of people or story types. ie
the hero, the scapegoat, the descent into the underworld.

7. Identify and describe the disciplines in the humanities.
• Music-an artistic form of auditory expression that incorporates instruments of
human voices in a structed and continuous manner.

• Cinema-an artistic medium that uses the motion picture as a vehicle for
storytelling and other creative expressions.
• Visual Arts-Art forms that entail creation of primarily visual works which
can be 2 or 3 dimensional. Examples: painting, illustrations,
photography, printmaking, sculpture
• Literature-Art form of the written word. Examples: poetry, novels, plays, short
stories
• Theater-A branch of the performing arts in which actors perform a drama or
musical before a live audience.
• Dance-An art form involving a sequence of rhythmic movements or steps usually
performed to music.
• Architecture-The science and art of designing buildings and other structures.
• Philosophy- the pursuit of wisdom about the nature of such matters as existence,
reality,
consciousness, knowledge, truth, and justice.
o Metaphysics: nature of being and the world
o Epistemology: nature and scope of knowledge
o Ethics: moral philosophy
o Aesthetics: nature of beauty and art
o Logic: nature of reasoning
o Philosophy of mind: nature of the mind and its relationship to the body

8. What is art and how does it function?
Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination,
typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be
appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
The five broad functions:
• Provides aesthetic pleasure
• Offers political and social commentary
• Can assist in physical and emotional healing
• Can create historical artifacts from a specific time of place
• Can be used to enable commerce in advertising products and services

9. How is humanism apparent in Eastern cultures?
Eastern traditions such as Buddhism emphasized discipline and self-development
through specialized physical and meditative practices in order to assist individuals
in achieving spiritual enlightenment.

10.What is consilience and why is it significant in higher education?
Consilience is the art and science of exploring the overlaps of different subjects
(science & humanities) in search of commonalities & places of agreement. It is
significant in high education because it allows for better understanding of other
cultures and worldviews. It helps to take the blinders off.

11.How can studying the humanities help you in your future career path?
Areas of concentrated study in the College of Business, such as global trade and
commerce, and enterprise and entrepreneurialism, while having brought the
world together like never before, have also produced massive violations of human
rights. An ever-growing need for virtue and character formation applies across
cultures and social strata. In the Humanities, the business of art, literature,
philosophy, music, drama, film, and photography intersect, creating a meeting
place where we see how we are a part of a larger, human community with care
and concern for each other. In this sense, the humanist creates a worldwide
conversation where many voices from many places share their stories.

Module 2: The Classical Period – approximately 500 BCE to 500 CE

1. Identify, define, and explain the importance of each of the Major Themes of the Classical period.
(See the blue tabs on page 2.05)
• Balance: symmetry in all things. Art, architecture, the human soul should all be
balanced and in
harmony creating the Golden Mean (Aristotle-the desirable middle between two
extremes).
• Truth/Reason: Truth is information acquired through reason, discovery, and
the pursuit of knowledge as opposed to tradition.
• Democracy/Republic: democracy is where the people vote on every thing and
everyone has a voice. Republic is where people vote in the people who vote on
every thing and the voice is
given to those representatives. Additionally, the Republic is where the divided
houses of government comes from because the upper and lower class
representatives couldn’t get along.
• Polytheism: belief in multiple gods that each control separate aspects of life. Also
included the
Muses (daughters of Zues) who invoked inspiration and creativity. “Music” is
derived from the muses.
• Humanism: human-centered approach to excellence. The study of the creative and
intellectual contributions of all human cultures. Focus on the power, beauty, and
potential of human in a
more realistic approach.

2. Study each Discipline for the period using the discipline pages in the module (Religion,
Philosophy, Poetry, Art, Architecture, Music). Study the Example Works provided on each
page.

Address the following:
a. How are the Major Themes from page 2.05 reflected in the discipline?
b. Describe the main characteristics of each Discipline.
c. What new elements or innovations were introduced in the discipline? (Note: there may
not always be an innovation for each discipline.)
• Religion-polytheistic and varied across the world
• Philosophy-investigations anchored in reason and truth rather than mythology
• Poetry-works that celebrated notable humans that best represent the
virtues of reason, democracy, balance, and the republic. Also addressed was
love, allegiance to family and
culture, and a deep sense of loyalty and perseverance. Hero epics shifted to lyric
poetry.
• Art-Greeks emphasized the elevation of the human form with a focus on
balance, harmony, and ideal proportions. Beauty is divine. Romans followed
Greek thinking but focused more
on glorifying the Roman Empire and the Emperor himself.
Contrapposto=contra positioning of sculptures.
• Architecture-Greeks through stringent mathematic equations focused on the
quest for
perfect proportions with post-and-lintel. Romans developed the use of columns
and arches, concrete, and is famous for the largest single-span dome of the
Pantheon (temple dedicated to all the Roman gods).
• Music-music is math and has perfect proportions. Octaves and harmonic
intervals are
discovered. Music was very important part of celebrations, including athletic
competitions.

d. Explain how the Example Works (philosophical readings, The Republic, poems, plays,
sculptures, buildings, the Delphic Hymns) reflect the major themes and characteristics
of the Classical period.

3. List the Cultural Exchange and Diversity that took place during the Classical period. (See
