SAQ 1 Question:
Consider the following essay title:
Is mental health illness among children and young adults in
the UK an epidemic?
1. What are the four key steps that you would need to
consider to ensure that you understand how this question
needs to be tackled?

Your answer:

1. Identify what the question is asking and what are the most
important parts of the essay title. Key words could be
highlighted or listed. In this case, ‘children and young adults
in the UK’ is important as well as ‘epidemic’ and ‘mental
health illness’.
2. Identify words or concepts I do not understand. The
definition of the words could be documented and possibly
used in the essay. In this case, I fully understand the
language so there are no words or concepts that I do not
understand. However, the concept of mental health being
an epidemic is something that should be noted down as this
is a significant statement.
3. State initial thoughts, ideas, and questions (once a better
understanding of the title and its demands has been
gained). In this case, I would need to investigate why
mental health illness is specifically being focused upon
children and young adults. Also, I would need to investigate
the severity of mental health illness in the UK.
4. Find out the word count and criteria I am expected to meet
for this essay. In this case, if this were a 3 credit unit, the
word count would be 1000 – 1500, and if this were a 6
credit unit, the word count would be 2000 – 2500. For an
actual assigned essay, I would have a criteria I need to
meet.
