Individual Assignment: leadership in hospitals
A bold quote from Simon Sinek: “I fear hospitals are some of the worst examples of
leadership. It may sound strange, but too many leaders think only of their patients. That’s
wrong. They have to think of their employees, the doctors and nurses. They have to think of
it as a job. They have to manage. And then in turn, the doctors and nurses have to think of
their patients.” (Sinek prefers a transformational approach, and critiques a transactional
approach).
Do you agree?
Create your own response to this statement. Incorporate the following elements in your
response and use the mandatory literature and lecture:
1. Describe who leaders in hospitals are (e.g. different backgrounds, informal/formal). (e.g.
Daly et al. 2014)
According to Daly et al., there are two kinds of leaders in hospitals. The formal, managerial
leaders, who focus on administration and values/mission of the hospital. And the clinical
leaders, which are the health care professionals (who may or may not work in that particular
hospital). This is the kind of leadership which is emphasized as important in this article, and
it should increase patient outcomes and the overall quality of the hospital.
Nurses could be clinical leaders too, Daly et al. even stress their importance.
Group Assignment: Building a theoretical model
There are many debates on leadership. Some see leadership as one of the most important
factors within an organisation, while others question the importance and the effectiveness
of leadership. In the literature there are several theories how leadership could make a
difference.
Read the mandatory literature and draw a theoretical model where you focus on the
question how leaders are able to influence performance. Describe different ways (e.g.
directly or indirectly via motivation, culture etc.) in which leaders can make a difference.
