Anorexia Nervosa
Diagnostic Criteria:
1. Restriction of Energy Intake: Significantly low body weight in the context
of age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health.
2. Intense Fear of Gaining Weight or Becoming Fat: Persistent behavior that
interferes with weight gain, even though at a significantly low weight.
3. Disturbance in Self-Perceived Weight or Shape: Undue influence of body
weight or shape on self-evaluation or persistent lack of recognition of the
seriousness of the current low body weight.
Hallmark Features:
• Severe Caloric Restriction: Extreme reduction in food intake leading to
very low body weight.
• Fear of Weight Gain: Overwhelming fear of gaining weight or becoming
fat, despite being underweight.
• Distorted Body Image: Individuals perceive themselves as overweight even
when they are underweight.
• Physical Symptoms: Amenorrhea in females, brittle hair and nails, dry skin,
lanugo (fine body hair), and sensitivity to cold.
Bulimia Nervosa
Diagnostic Criteria:
1. Recurrent Episodes of Binge Eating: Eating an unusually large amount of
food in a discrete period of time with a sense of lack of control over eating
during the episode.
2. Recurrent Inappropriate Compensatory Behaviors: To prevent weight
gain, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or other
medications, fasting, or excessive exercise.
