Chemistry 261 Fall Quarter 2017 Instructor: Mrs. Berg Office hours: Mon. 11:30am-12:30pm in Office S340 and Science Study Center Thurs.. 12:301:30pm; Phone: Text, laboratory book, laboratory goggles and lab write-up manual, periodic chart, homework, projects and quizzes are required!!! Optional: Molecular Model Kit and Colored pencils for taking notes Late work is not accepted unless ill and the instructor is notified immediately!!! Please register with the Disability Resource Center in B 132 (phone: ) if you have an accommodation falling under the Americans with Disabilities Act and see me privately. The last day to withdraw without a “W” posted is Sept. 29 and with a “W” is Nov. 3. This must be documented with registration. If the class is not completed, the grade is the sum of the scores obtained before leaving. No cellular phones are to be active and ringing in class and should be left in your backpack!!!!!! Extra help is available in the Science Study Center S 114 every day and with me during office hours!!!!!! Grading Scale: 95% = A Homework (5) = 25 points 90% = A- Review Paper (1) = 25 points 85% = B+ Lecture Quizzes (2) = 100 points 80% = B Lecture Mid-term (1) = 100 points 78% = BLabs (10) = 100 points 75% = C+ Lab quizzes (10) = 50 points 70% = C Molecules (4) = 4 points 68% = C Final Exam (1) = 100 points 65% = D+ Total = 504 points 60% = D Less = F Bellevue College Laboratory Notebook Reports The report for each experiment is written neatly in ink using a book store lab manual as follows: (Note: Save the first 2 pages as the Table of Contents) Before Lab: 1. Title of the experiment, date and name of partner 2. Purpose: Describe the skills to be learned and the principles to be demonstrated by proper performance of the experiment 3. Formulas and reactions if mentioned in the lab book 4. Procedure: List and number the steps necessary to perform the lab without using your lab book because your hardback lab book is not allowed in the lab (note: leave enough space for observations). New setup pictures may be copied from the back of the book 5. Pre-lab Exercises: Answer any pre-lab questions if noted in your lab book. Most labs will not have pre-lab work. 6. Data: Prepare a section to record the data as suggested in your lab book or as needed for each lab During and After Lab: 1. Data: Complete the Data section during lab and add notes to the procedure section describing color changes or other sensory observations 2. Tabulated Results: This section might include a table or analyzed scan to properly explain your data section, but is only necessary on specific labs 3. Questions: Answer any questions found in the lab book that pertain to this particular lab (Note: at the back of the lab section) 4. Discussion: Two sections written in complete sentences are required for the discussion section a. Problems and errors: Include all possible errors that caused your data to be imperfect or difficult b. Learning: Describe what was learned by this laboratory and remember that this section should agree with your purpose.
