The purpose of this module is to introduce and explain what Developmentally Appropriate Practice is and how it applies to children. It is our professional responsibility to promote and provide quality care and education to every child who comes to us for care. Developmentally Appropriate Practice, or DAP, is a concept developed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Developmentally Appropriate Practice focuses on children birth to eight years old and is made up of three principle components: age appropriateness, individual appropriateness, and social/cultural appropriateness. Developmentally Appropriate Practice focuses on children birth through eight years old and is made up of three principle components: age appropriateness, individual appropriateness, and social/cultural appropriateness. Developmentally Appropriate Practice helps teachers improve the effectiveness of their work with children. It helps them make decisions based on what they know about children. Teachers who know how children think and learn recognize that children learn best when they are given many opportunities to explore materials and their environment with their peers and adults. Knowledgeable caregivers are able to build on what children already know and can do, but also make them stretch toward what they don't know yet or are unable to do without help. This idea is critical to understanding and implementing Developmentally Appropriate Practice. Learning a new skill does not happen by chance teachers must know each of the children in their classrooms. They need to be able to identify where they are in all areas of development and then plan for and engage them in a variety of activities that are challenging and achievable Teachers who are grounded in Developmentally Appropriate Practice are able to make critical decisions when selecting materials, supporting interactions, implementing curriculum, and adjusting instruction.
