Therapeutic Rapport Staff Attitude/Approaches to Anxiety- A change in typical behavior Supportive- Empathic, non judgemental approach Staff Attitude /Approach to Defensive- Protecting oneself from a real or percieved challenge Directive- Provide clear direction or instruction Staff Attitude/Approach to Risk Behavior- Behavior that represents an imminent or immediate risk to self or others. Saftey Interventions- Non-restrictive and restrictive strategies to maximize saftey and minimize harm Staff Attitude/Approach to Reduction- Deacrease in physical and emotional energy. Theraputic Rapport-Re-establish the relationship Integrated Experience Behavior influences behavior. Being aware of your behavior, perceptions, and remaining control will increase likelihood of successful intervention Percipitating Factors Factors Influencing a person's behavior. These are internal/external causes of behavior over which you little or no control. Rational Detatchment Recognizing the need to remain professional by managing your own behavior and attitude and not taking the attitude of others personally. Rational Detachment Tips 1. Take a deep breath 2. Choose your words carefully 3. Ask for help 3 Forms of Communication 1. Verbal 2. Paraverbal 3. Nonverbal Verbal Communication The words you use to send messages. Consider the significance of your words. Keep your message: -short, simple, and clear. -Respectful -Positively phrased Paraverbal Communication How you say what you say. This includes your tone, volume and rythm of speech. -Use caring, supportive tones -Keep appropriate volume to the situation -Deliver your message at a rate the person can process Nonverbal Communication Nonverbal elements include personal space, body language, communication through touch, and listening with empathy. Personal Space The distance people prefer to maintain between themsleves and others. It includes the social zone, personal zone, and intimate zone. Body Language The postures, gestures, facial expressions, and movements used to communicate. Communication Through Touch A form of physical contact that expresses feelings or emotions.
