You could say that these years revolve around excess, experiment and ego.
Overload of diverse styles. Creativity was everywhere. Important to stand out, be unique.
That’s why they were experimenting so much. Everything about the body was
emphasised.
Being beautiful didn’t matter as long as you were unique and stood out from the crowd.
Paris → official capital of fashion
New york → art and club scene, nice-marketing, designer boutiques. Reorientation of
mass market institutions that privileged homogenisation of taste such as fashion
magazines and retailers. Proliferation of niche marketing magazine (targeted only a certain
kind of people, afro, gay,...)
London → clubs, music, magazines
Milan → new designers collaborate with the garment industry in Italy, which is booming. Bc
of the designer’s boutique their collection became more affordable and they developed
ready-to-wear collection. Milan saw an opportunity to develop something with all these
designers. Concept of « made in Italy » was developed, connotation of high quality.
