What is a natural experiment?
- Naturally occurring event or situation.
- Quasi-experiments: the experimenter has no or little control over the situation
observe.
- It can give us an idea about current situations that can help us in policy making
or designing interventions which are really beneficial.
A catch-up model of adoption:
The long term development of preterm babies:
- Term premature only entered the English language around 120 years ago.
- Introduction brought up that some babies are born before their full term.
- They brought up the idea of the environment that babies should be in a year afte
their birth.
- Parents were discouraged to visit their babies (in the 50's) which left the babies
abandoned.
- 40's: provided special care facilities for infants.
- 60's: special care nurseries.
Definitions:
- Premature: birth that occurs before 37 complete weeks. It depends how many
weeks.
- The limit of viability is currently around 22 weeks.
